Dr. Edward H. Latham (1842-1928) was the agency physician for the Sioux, Spokane, and Colville Indian Reservations. Born in Ohio, he graduated from medical school in 1884, and arrived in Nespelem, at the Colville Indian Reservation in 1890. An amateur photographer, Latham took hundreds of photographs, recording the events and residents of these Reservations using portraits and close shots. Other Descriptive Information

Latham appears to have sold or given his negatives to Lawrence Lindsley, who incorporated them into his own negative bank and registered them in a group in his records as numbers 4769-4975. This group of negatives (5x7 and 4x5) was acquired along with the Lindsley donation. The group of 11x14 mounted Latham images, along with corresponding copy negatives, were received from the Idaho State Historical Society in 1990 and described in the collection in 2025.

Content on this site is drawn from a historical source which includes materials that may contain offensive language reflecting racist, sexist, ethnically derogatory or other offensive biases. The images and text in this site are presented as specific, original artifacts recording the attitudes, perspectives and beliefs of a different era. They remain included as part of an honest presentation of that history and of the primary source material. The University of Washington does not endorse the views expressed in this collection which may contain text offensive to some researchers. We are working to confront bias and racism at the individual, institutional and systemic levels.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

Arranged in 4 series.

  • Photographs with Latham number
  • Photographs without Latham number
  • Negatives
  • Finishing envelopes

The reference numbers Latham applied to his photographs sometimes include uppercase letters to indicate different versions of similar images. However, the arrangment for this collection also uses lowercase letters to indicate different versions of some photographs. As a result, some images contain both uppercase and lowercase letters (e.g., Latham 4887Aa), and in some instances, Latham uses the letter "C" with a space, and marks versions with a period (e.g., "Latham 4882 C.2").
