Historical Note

Today the Associated Students of the University of Washington (ASUW) functions as the undergraduate student government on the Seattle campus, acting as a representative voice of students and sponsors many student run activities. From 1906 until 1976 it represented all students at the University of Washington.

The student assembly was formed in 1888, three years after the UW moved from Downtown Seattle to its present site. In 1901 the students involved in the Athletic Association, the Oratorical Society, as well as some other student organizations came together to form the Associated Students of the University of Washington. The 1903 Tyee has a copy of this organization's constitution in it.

Articles of Incorporation for the Associated Students of the University of Washington were filed with the Secretary of State of the state of Washington on April 20, 1906. The document titled “An Act to Provide for the Incorporation of Associations for Social, Charitable, and Educational Purposes” was filed pursuant to Chapter 158 of the laws of Washington of 1895.

The incorporation came about on the advice of its administrative and faculty advisers as a way to protect individual students from liability for the actions of the student government. The ASUW helped create several buildings on campus that are still used today such as the University Bookstore, the Hec Edmundson Pavilion, the HUB, as well as programs such as the U-PASS, the first campus recycling program, and a course evaluation catalog.

In 1947 the ASUW hired Charles Owens to facilitate the final planning to build a student center on campus. Discussions for such a building had begun in 1919 but never reached beyond the discussion stage. Prior to the opening of the Associated Students Memorial Union Building on October 25, 1949, Charles was promoted to the position of Manager of ASUW Activities.

The ASUW was advised by Charles Owens but the office of Student Activities (SAO), which had replaced the Dean of Men and Dean of Women, still had a role to play in regard to the advising of ASUW. In 1962 President Odegaard created a committee, Chaired by Bob Waldo, to examine the role and structure of the ASUW. This resulted in Waldo I which created the Student Activities Office, which was to advise the ASUW in all its undertakings and a Manager of the Husky Union Building.

In 1976 the HUB and South Campus Center were combined into a new department called the Student Union Facilities (SUF), reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs. Both buildings had advisory boards with ASUW, and later GPSS appointing students to represent their interests. SAO also was to report to the same Vice President but with its own Director.

In April of 1976, as part of the ASUW Spring elections the students voted to create a graduate and professional student government, GPSS (Graduate and Professional Student Senate), to represent their interests more fully. The ASUW continued to represent undergraduate students. Both the ASUW and GPSS received support and advising from SAO.

In 1987 SAO and SUF were combined into Student Activities and Union Facilities (SUF) with Kathy Niccolls as the Director. SAO continues to provide advising services, training, and related resources for students and student groups to plan and coordinate their events, programs, and activities.
