Historical Note

The Nordic Heritage Museum is an internationally recognized museum and cultural center in Seattle, Washington where people of all backgrounds are welcomed to be inspired by the values, traditions, art, and spirit of the Nordic peoples. Dedicated to collecting, preserving, and educating since its founding in 1980, Nordic Heritage Museum is the only museum in the United States to honor the legacy of immigrants from the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.

Content Description

These films were collected and held by the Nordic Heritage Museum. Many of the films are promotional travel films, produced by organizations including Scandinavian Airline Systems, the Swedish Travel Information Bureau, and the Spanish National Tourist Office. The travel films explore Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Spain, and the Swedish community in Vancouver, BC. Narrative films in the collection originate from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. A large portion of the films depict Scandinavian industry, with a focus on fishing, showing the process of capturing, processing, and preparing fish. Other films include recordings of a Nordic Festival at Seattle Center, films promoting the Sons of Norway organization, and World War II era Finnish news reels.

      • Description: Continental Notebook

        SAS airplanes are shown multiple times as a mode of transportation to arrive in Sacndinavia. Once in Scandinavia, this film features streets, architecture, statues, guards, sporting activites (equestrian, rowing, golf, water sports, and skeet), festivals, livestock, water ways, mountains, and urban areas.

      • Description: Life in Stockholm

        The film begins with an aerial view of Stockholm followed by varied views of the city. People sit in coffee shops near the sea and watch men on the boats unload cargo. People commute around the city via tram, car, bicycle, or train. Guards stand outside of buildings. During the winter, children run around in the snow. Snow is shoveled out of the city streets using wheelbarrows and is dumped into the water. In the country people go on on sleigh rides, ski, sled, and ice skate. People are shown visiting parks and other natural areas. Families plant trees, clean their boats for the season, pick apples, and bird watch. The summer beaches are full of children and families.

      This film tracks the process of industrial fishing, as people catch, sell, prepare, and package fish. It also features an auction on fishing trips. Images of a statue in memorium to Chales H. Petty, from Westport, Massachusetts. The plaque says that he "died Dec. 14 1863 in the 18th year of his age. His death occurred in nine hours after being bitten by a shark, while bathing near the ship. He was buried by his shipmates on the Island of DeLoss near the Coast of Africa."

  • The Stikelstad Film: Celebrating the 900th anniversary of Christianity in Norway

    These films are related to a 1932 film made by an unknown filmmaker, acquired by Pastor Norris Stoa in 1962. The film Stoa acquired depicted a celebration of the 900th anniversary of Christianity in Norway, with numerous leaders and notable figures from Norway in attendance. The story of Stoa's acquistion led to him meeting with the King and Crown Prince of Norway.
