Historical Note

The Union Pacific Railroad Company was formed by Congress in 1862. The Union Pacific Railroad extended 1,006 miles before it joined the Central Pacific Railroad in Promontory Point, Utah on May 10, 1869. The company grew to operate out of 13 states in the American Midwest and West. In 1969 ownership was transferred to the Union Pacific Corporation where it has since stayed. Union Pacific became known as the Union Pacific System when it merged with the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company and the Western Pacific Railroad Company in 1982.
