Historical NoteReturn to Top

East House was completed in 1947 as a student residence hall to handle the post-war student boom at the State College of Washington, and then demolished in May, 1957. This building, along with a handful of others, were moved to Pullman from a former military base at Farragut, Idaho. Colloquially known either as the Quad, or else as Mud Hollow for the lack of paved sidewalks, East, South, North, and West Houses once occupied the area that would eventually become the French Administration building block, the parking below the Fine Arts building, and the veterinary complex parking. Students who lived in the house were known as “Easties,” and East House is referred to as East Pioneer House in places within the scrapbook. Years later, West House is recalled as Pioneer House and the name is not remembered for the other three. In 2025, the space where East House sat is the Grimes Way Playfield.

Arrangement

All scrapbooks are stored flat in one box.

Acquisition Information

Sara Refsland, office manager in WSU Housing and Residence Life, donated this collection to the Washington State University Libraries on January 15, 2025, where it was retained without an accession number. It had been in storage in various Orton Hall locations for years.

Processing Note

Steinar Goheen processed this collection in February 2025. One scrapbook was received as loose pages; the second possessed low levels of structural integrity and was unbound here. The original order of pages was retained. Loose photos were matched to scrapbooks using given context clues.

Separated Materials

Materials from WSU dormitories East House, Kruegel Hall (Archives 421), and Orton Hall (Archives 422) were all received together, but processed separately. A single Waller Hall calendar was incorporated into Archives 339. A few remaining unmatched photos were returned to the donor.

Related Materials

Another scrapbook for the Quad area dormitories is held as State College of Washington Esquire Hall (North House) Scrapbook, 1947-1954 (Archives 356)
