Content Description

The Friends of the Marriott Library records (1966-1999) provides documentation on the history and activities of the Friends of the Marriott Library (Friends), as well as historical information on many of Utah's authors. It contains pamphlets, news clippings, newsletters, program announcments, a scrapbook, schedules of events, and publicity announcements for the events and programs sponsored by Friends. It contains business records in the form of correspondence, lecture contracts, annual reports, budget statements, meeting minutes, and an organizational constitution. It also contains membership, biograhical sketches on some of the board members, information on the annual banquet, and and samples of each of the keepsakes given out at these banquets (and sent to members of the Friends organization). The keepsakes range from reproductions of historical documents to facsimiles of published items. These keepsakes were issued at special functions (such as the annual banquet) as a token of appreciation for patrons' support of the University of Utah library system, and as a remineder of the treasures found in the Marriott Library's Special Collecytions Department. This collection is arranged in chronological order to facilitate the incorporation of additional documents in the future. There are two exceptions to this chronological order. The first is in box 1, folders 1-4, which contain various undated items. The second is in box 16, which contains oversize material. The inventory for this collection is followed by a detailed name and suject index. Additional information about the Friends organization can be found in the Univeristy of Utah Archives and in the Western Americana Division of Special COllections. In the spring of 1996, the board of directors for the Friends organization decided to change its name from the Frieds of the University of Utah Libraries to the Friends of the Marriott Library; therefore, if you are looking for additional information on this organization, it will be necessary to check under both organizational names.
