College of Natural Resources (CNR) records collection consist of photos for the Idaho Forester, research projects in association with the Hornocker Wildlife Institute (also known as the Hornocker Wildlife Research Institute), and the University of Idaho Cooperative Park Studies Unit (UI CPSU); Materials on grasses, bushes, and weeds and portraits of honored CNR alumni are also included as well along with materials in association with Lindle Offenbacker. Materials span over the years of 1911-2018.
Historical Note
The College of Natural Resources (CNR) has a long-standing history, beginning in 1909 and continuing to this present day. The College has drastically evolved during this time, initially beginning in 1909 as the Department of Forestry within the College of Agriculture, then transitioning into a School in 1917, and eventually becoming its own College in 1953. Alongside its various name changes during the expanse of 100+ years, CNR has reshaped its mission and services, thanks to the leadership and vision of it's deans. - from College of Natural Resources collection, 1886-2017, UG 92.
The Idaho Forester was published annually from 1917 - 1997 by the University of Idaho's forestry program. The journal combines research articles, U of I program activities information, and analysis of the forest products industry, formerly the dominant industry in Northern Idaho. - from Idaho Forester Collection, University of Idaho Library Digital Collections.
Hornocker Wildlife Institute was founded in 1985 by Dr. Maurice Hornocker who was the dean of the mountain lion research and the leader of the Idaho Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Idaho. The Hornocker Wildlife Institute would conduct intensive long-term research projects on threatened and endangered species and sensitive ecological systems. They used to be part of the University of Idaho but have merged with the Wildlife Conservation Society and are now based out of the WCS offices in Bozeman, Montana. - from Hornocker Wildlife Institute - Selway River Survey records, 1890-2000, MG 440.
Lindle Offenbacker was a soil conservationist for the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation
Service and received multiple degrees from the University of Idaho. Offenbacker was also the past president of the Idaho State Rifle & Pistol Association and a long-term member of the Idaho chapter of The Wildlife Society and Ecological Society of America. He passed away at the age of 79 on July 11, 2025.
The University of Idaho's Cooperative Park Studies Unit (CPSU) began in August,1979 when UI and the National Park Service agreed to sponsor a CPSU. The unit was involved in the application of social science research to recreation management.
