Historical Note
The Agronomy Club at Washington State University, then WSC, was first organized in March, 1929, consisting of 34 charter student and faculty members. The stated intent at that first meeting was to promote better acquaintance and a spirit of good fellowship among students and faculty interested in Agronomy.
The Water Movement in Soils film appears to have been initially made by WSC Crop and Soil Science faculty members W.H. Gardner and J.C. Halch, but was marketed and distributed by the Agronomy Club.
Content Description
Eight recordings of the same 25 minute video work, Water Movement in Soils, though possibly changed over time. One u-matic tape, labeled original version from 1959. One reel-to-reel audio tape, labeled new unedited ¼” track, 1988. Six VHS tapes, including one labeled master, one Spanish version, and one “turf version.”

Ian Burke, in the department of Crop and Soil Sciences, donated this collection to the Washington State University Libraries on October 18, 2022, where they were retained as UA2022-09. They had been in storage in WSU’s Johnson Hall for decades, and were removed to MASC when that building was emptied for demolition.
Processing Note
University Archivist Mark O’English preliminarily accessioned this collection in December of 2022. The materials need to be digitized and duplicate physical materials discarded, leaving only one physical copy of each iteration of the film.
Related Materials
A version of Water Movement in Soils was made available online by WSU Irrigation, circa 2016, and can be found on YouTube.
A 16mm film which we assume to be the same thing can be found in the WSU Libraries proper.
