    Scope and Content: Biographical feature; research material (1869, 1949); field notes on "Totagadde Village," collected by Judith Wiltse Harper (1969); published articles on "Totagadde" by Helen Ullrich (1969-1993)

    "Totagadde Village" is the pseudonym given to a village in Shimoga District in Karnataka, India. Edward Harper conducted ethnographic and anthropological research in this village at various times from 1956-1969.

    Judith Wiltse Harper researched one Sudra caste in the village for her doctoral dissertation. Helen Ullrich's publications document 24 years of intermittent visits to the village to study Havik Brahmins: their attitudes toward education, women and family structure; the effect of competition and modernization; and various cultural, physical and mental health issues affecting women.
