Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Historian, authority on modern Southeast Asia. Smail, whose full name is John Richard Wharton Smail, was born in 1930 and wrote a thesis at Cornell, "Bandung in the Early Revolution, 1945-1946; a Study in the Social History of the Indonesian Revolution". He was a professor of Southeast Asian History at the University of Wisconsin.
