		  countries</abstract></did><bioghist encodinganalog="5450_" id="a2"><p>Historian, authority on modern Southeast Asia. Smail, whose full name
		  is John Richard Wharton Smail, was born in 1930 and wrote a thesis at Cornell,
		  "Bandung in the Early Revolution, 1945-1946; a Study in the Social History of
		  the Indonesian Revolution". He was a professor of Southeast Asian History at
		  the University of Wisconsin.</p></bioghist><scopecontent><p>Note cards. Notes of bibliographical references, diary entries and of
		  interviews in connection with his research on Indonesia, Malaysia, the
