Content Description

A crayon portrait of an unidentified man, possibly from the greater Portland area, probably created circa 1880-1910; and a newspaper fragment formerly used in its frame as padding. The portrait was formerly in the possession of a Forest Grove resident and may depict an early Forest Grove community member, similar in appearance to Sidney Harper Marsh. The format of the portrait, a crayon enlargement, is based a photographic process used from about 1860 until the early 20th century. The portrait was removed from a ca. 1900 frame, which was returned to the donor. The fragment of an unidentified 1908 agricultural newspaper was used as padding within this frame.

Custodial History

The earliest known owner of the portrait was a long-time Forest Grove, Oregon, resident, whose name is not recorded. This resident's possessions were acquired in the 2000s by Valerie Warren, owner of "Heirloom Antiques," an antiques store located at 2038 Main Street, Forest Grove, one block away from the campus of Pacific University. Mark Bailey, a professor, noticed the portrait and thought that it might depict the university's first president, Sidney Harper Marsh. He arranged for the donation of the portrait from Valerie Warren to the Pacific University Archives.
