Historical Background

On August 18, 1908, eleven players who had played for the University of Washington baseball team departed aboard the Tosa Maru, for a series of games against Waseda University in Tokyo and the Yokohama Cricket & Athletic Club. One of the players said they had arrived 16 days early so they could tour sites that fellow Japanese students at the University of Washington had told them about. Team members enjoyed riding in rickshaws, visiting temples, attending the theater and were entertained by diplomat Count Okuma, founder of Waseda University. The visitors photographed interactions with Japanese people they met on the street and took their turn pulling the drivers in their rickshaws. The player roster included: infielders Dave Altizer, Jim Delahanty, Jerry Freeman, George McBride, Bill Shipke, Bob Unglaub; Outfielders: Byron Resser, Leo Teats, Percy Logerlof,; Catcher: Roy Brown; First Base: Webster Hoover; Second Base: Arthur Hammerlund, Shortstop: Walter Meagher, Third Base: Ralph Teats, Center Field; Leo Teats. Left Field: Percy Logerlof; Right Field: Byron Reeser, Manager: Howard Gillette, manager.

The games were covered extensively in the Japanese press, Jiji Shinpo, Tokyo Asahi Shhinbun, as well as the Seattle Daily Times, Seattle Evening Star, and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The games were well attended. Curious Japanese even attended team practices. During the ten game tour, the team representing the University of Washington won 7 of the 10 games.

A clipping from the Japan Advertiser reported that during one of the games that stretched into the 15th inning, bad throws enabled University of Washington players to reach the bases and ultimately for J. Webster to score the winning run.

Detailed accounts of the games are on the internet in a Society for American Baseball Research article entitled The 1908 University of Washington Tour of Japan. .
