		  Club teams, as well as some personal photographs</abstract></did><bioghist encodinganalog="5450_" id="a2"><p>Joseph Webster Hoover (1883-1954) was born in Burlingame, Kansas, the
		  only son of Miles L. Hoover and Laura M. Gibson. He married Helen Elizabeth
		  Steinruck in 1913, in Everett, Washington. They were the parents of 4
		  daughters. He lived in Everett and Olympia, Washington and died in 1954 at the
		  age of 70. He was buried in Tacoma, Washington.</p></bioghist><odd type="hist"><p>On August 18, 1908, eleven players who had played for the University
		  of Washington baseball team departed aboard the <emph render="italic"> Tosa
		  Maru, </emph>for a series of games against Waseda University in Tokyo and the
		  Yokohama Cricket &amp; Athletic Club. One of the players said they had arrived
		  16 days early so they could tour sites that fellow Japanese students at the
		  University of Washington had told them about. Team members enjoyed riding in
		  rickshaws, visiting temples, attending the theater and were entertained by
		  diplomat Count Okuma, founder of Waseda University. The visitors photographed
		  interactions with Japanese people they met on the street and took their turn
		  pulling the drivers in their rickshaws. The player roster included: infielders
		  Dave Altizer, Jim Delahanty, Jerry Freeman, George McBride, Bill Shipke, Bob
		  Unglaub; Outfielders: Byron Resser, Leo Teats, Percy Logerlof,; Catcher: Roy
		  Brown; First Base: Webster Hoover; Second Base: Arthur Hammerlund, Shortstop:
		  Walter Meagher, Third Base: Ralph Teats, Center Field; Leo Teats. Left Field:
		  Percy Logerlof; Right Field: Byron Reeser, Manager: Howard Gillette,
		  manager.</p><p>The games were covered extensively in the Japanese press, 
		  <emph render="italic"> Jiji Shinpo, </emph><emph render="italic"> Tokyo Asahi
		  Shhinbun, </emph> as well as the <emph render="italic"> Seattle Daily Times,
		   </emph><emph render="italic"> Seattle Evening Star, </emph> and the 
		  <emph render="italic"> Seattle Post-Intelligencer.  </emph> The games were well
		  attended. Curious Japanese even attended team practices. During the ten game
		  tour, the team representing the University of Washington won 7 of the 10 games.
		  </p><p>A clipping from the<emph render="italic"> Japan Advertiser </emph>
		  reported that during one of the games that stretched into the 15th inning, bad
		  throws enabled University of Washington players to reach the bases and
		  ultimately for J. Webster to score the winning run.</p><p> Detailed accounts of the games are on the internet in a
