Biographical Note
Professor Baker, 1893-, studied under Dr. Franz Boas at Columbia University; taught five years at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee; four years at Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia; and six years at Kamehameha Schools for Boys, Honolulu, Hawaii; and in 1953 had been at Boise Junior College for six years.
Content Description
The collection consists of manuscript of Baker's monograph The Forgotten Kutenai; Boise: Mountain States Press, 1955, and the correspondence, notes, and pamphlets gathered in connection with his writing and publishing it. A printed copy is also included.
Other Descriptive Information
Aside from the manuscript, probably the most useful items for Pacific Northwest history are the lists of persons concer ned with Indian culture in Container 1B-C; correspondence concerning U. S. Indian policies in Container 2A; pamphlets, notes, and clippings concerning Indians in Container 4A-C.
One letter from Simon Francis, an Indian, giving suggestions or statements regarding Indian culture made in rough draft of book, describes Indian customs in solemnizing marriages; taking sweatbaths; etc.
