      <p>Professor Baker, 1893-, studied under Dr. Franz Boas at Columbia
		  University; taught five years at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee; four
		  years at Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia; and six years at Kamehameha
		  Schools for Boys, Honolulu, Hawaii; and in 1953 had been at Boise Junior
		  College for six years. </p>

      <p>The collection consists of manuscript of Baker's monograph 
		<title>The Forgotten Kutenai</title>; Boise: Mountain States Press, 1955,
		and the correspondence, notes, and pamphlets gathered in connection with his
		writing and publishing it. A printed copy is also included.</p>

      <p>Aside from the manuscript, probably the most useful items for Pacific
		  Northwest history are the lists of persons concer ned with Indian culture in
		  Container 1B-C; correspondence concerning U. S. Indian policies in Container
		  2A; pamphlets, notes, and clippings concerning Indians in Container 4A-C. </p>
      <p>One letter from Simon Francis, an Indian, giving suggestions or
		  statements regarding Indian culture made in rough draft of book, describes
		  Indian customs in solemnizing marriages; taking sweatbaths; etc. </p>

      <p>Materials consist of letters, lists, pamphlets, clippings, and the
		  manuscript copy of the monograph. Inclusive dates are 1952-1956. </p>
