The Schoenfeld family arrived in Seattle in 1888. Herbert A. Schoenfeld (1874-1933) and Ralph Schoenfeld were the owners of Schoenfeld's Furniture in downtown Tacoma, which operated until 1996. The business first opened in 1888 as Standard Furniture Co. in Seattle. They were also active in retail trade and furniture associations. Herbert was active in philanthropic organizations in the Jewish community, and he opposed "radical" elements in the Jewish community, including the Modern School Association.
