Historical Background

Founded in 1899, St. Regis was a large international paper company. St. Regis produced 360,000 tons of kraft paper per year. Paper production began in Tacoma on January 5, 1949. St. Regis initially purchased a pulp mill in Tacoma in 1939 and spent years updating the mill into a kraft paper facility. Before 1949, St. Regis only manufactured pulp and multiwall bags at the Tacoma plant. By 1985, the mill had become the Simpson Tacoma Kraft Company, when it was puchased by the Simpson Paper Company of San Francisco.
