Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Joel Edward Ferris (1874-1960) was first President of the Board of Directors for Friends of the Library of Washington State University, 1938-1948, and served on the Board until his death in 1960. Ferris was Chairman of the Spokane and Eastern Division of the Seattle-First National Bank, Spokane, President of the Eastern Washington Historical Society and had received an honorary degree of doctor of laws from Whitman College and Washington State University. on the Board until his death in 1960. The papers of J. E. Ferris include his Washington State University Friends of the Library correspondence, comprising correspondence concerning the Judge Walter B. Beals Library (1938-1949); the files of correspondence of the WSU Library with Ferris (1938-1961); and WSU President Ernest O. Holland's correspondence with Ferris (1946-1950). Also included in the collection are pamphlets and newspaper articles written by Ferris and miscellaneous newspaper clippings and pamphlets concerning WSU.
