Historical Note

The Friends of the Library (FOL) was established in 1938 by WSU's president, E. O. Holland, and William Wirt Foote, head librarian. The FOL's purpose is to assist in securing for the university important library resources in the arts, sciences, and technologies which will contribute to the institution's prograns of teaching, research and state service. Anyone interested in these causes can become a member of the organization. The organization functions as a channel for financial support of the library's acquisitions program, as a mechanism to encourage donation of materials to the library, and as a public relations service for the Washington State University Libraries.

Since the mid 1950s, the library's administrative support for the FOL has been located in Manuscripts, Archives and Special Collections. These records often document the overlap between the two offices.
