Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Gerald A. Jayne was a computer programmer at the Idaho National Laboratory in Idaho Falls, Idaho and is considered to be one of the most famous conservation leaders in eastern Idaho. Jayne has been an active conservationist since the 1960s and was instrumental in many grassroots environmental causes. He was a founding member of the Hells Canyon Preservation Council and served in several leadership roles in the 1960s and 1970s. He was asked to work with Doris Milner, an officer in the Montana Wilderness Association, to set aside the headwaters of the Selway River. Jayne was a founding member of the Idaho Environmental Council and also served as its president and director for many years.

The bulk of the Gerald A. Jayne papers span the years 1969-1995. Included in the papers are correspondence and data gathered relating to preserving Hells Canyon, environmental impact and land use plans for some of Idaho’s national forests, correspondence with Morton Brigham, and Idaho Primitive Areas (IPA) appeals for legislation, articles and general correspondence.

Arrangement

The original order was retained with all of the materials from the 1989 accession being followed by the materials from the 1997, 2009, and 2014 accessions.

Location of Collection

Special Collections and Archives of the University of Idaho Library. Boxes 1-3 are shelved at range 38 and boxes 4-19 at range 141, in the cage area.

The papers of Gerald A. Jayne were in the possession of Gerald Jayne until time of donation.

Acquisition Information

The papers of Gerald A. Jayne were donated to the University of Idaho Library by Gerald Jayne in October 1989 (MA 1989-43), October 1997 (MA 1997-32), October 2009 (MA 2009-41), and October 2014 (MA 2014-55).

Processing Note

This collection was processed using the Basic processing method. Some materials were refoldered. The collection was reduced by 3.5 cubic feet.

Publications were removed and placed into a separate manuscript group Conservation Reports and Publications (MG 449).
