Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Washington State College’s High School Summer Camp was started in 1933 by Fine Arts Dean Herbert Kimbrough. It eventually expanded to include non-music fields including journalism, speech, drama, and art. Each Camp lasted four weeks (mid-June to mid-July). While the first camp was only 40 high school students, 1948 attendance was about 110 and 1949 attendance was 188.

Elaine Yoder Zakarison was the daughter of a WSC Sociology professor. She grew up in Pullman and received her own sociology degree at WSC in 1954. She became executive director of the YWCA on campus, and spent her career as a WSU administrator. In 1963, she attended the March on Washington.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collections consists of photographs, programs, scripts and readings, and administrative materials from the 1948 and 1949 iterations of the High School Summer Camps held on the Washington State College campus in Pullman, WA. Elaine Yoder appears to have been in the speech program at the Camps, and so most of the materials here relate to those courses.

Arrangement

Materials are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Acquisition Information

The papers were gifted to the Washington State University Music Library at an unknown point in time, probably directly from Elaine Zakarison. On Dec. 13, 2016, Sean Taylor of the Music Library discovered them in a file cabinet and transferred them to Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections, where they were retained as MS2016-33.

Processing Note

The materials were received in one three-hole punch notebook. They were unbound for processing, and large photographs and programs were removed from their mountings.

Related Materials

The Summer Camps are well documented in WSU’s Archives 298, School of Music Records and Photographs 1922-1977. Additional materials from the Yoder family can be found in the Fred Roy Yoder Papers, 1890-1980 (WSU Cage 620 and WSU MS2004-14), though the majority of that deals with Fred Yoder (Elaine’s father)’s work.
