Washington State College’s High School Summer Camp was started in 1933 by Fine Arts Dean Herbert Kimbrough. It eventually expanded to include non-music fields including journalism, speech, drama, and art. Each Camp lasted four weeks (mid-June to mid-July). While the first camp was only 40 high school students, 1948 attendance was about 110 and 1949 attendance was 188. <?xm-replace_text {Text of biographical or historical note, in paragraphs; separate each with paragraph tags}?>

Elaine Yoder Zakarison was the daughter of a WSC Sociology professor. She grew up in Pullman and received her own sociology degree at WSC in 1954. She became executive director of the YWCA on campus, and spent her career as a WSU administrator. In 1963, she attended the March on Washington.
