Historical Note

The Lapwai Mission press, operated by the Spalding mission at Lapwai, Idaho, was the first printing press in the Pacific Northwest, used from 1839 to 1845 to print texts supporting the activities of the mission.

This collection consists of a fragment of one of the texts printed on the press, a calendar and Nez Perce-English vocabulary: Shapahitamanash suyapu timptki (fragments of the upper half of pages 7-14), and five pieces of type from the press. It also includes copies of related documentation: acquisition information and research documents used during processing.
