Washington State University's Department of Communications was formed in 1964 by the merging of the Journalism Department with the broadcasting courses offered by the Speech Department. It became the Edward R. Murrow School of Communications in 1990.

The collection consists primarily of reports and documents used in planning and evaluation of the Communications program between 1976 and 1996. It also includes minutes of faculty meetings and departmental newsletters, dating from 1965 to 1991.

Arrangement

The collection is broken into two series, each arranged chronologically. First is administrative records and reports, and second is departmental newsletters and minutes of faculty / staff meetings.

Acquisition Information

These materials were donated by Thomas Heuterman of Washington State University’s Communications program to the WSU Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections in 1996. They were retained, with other papers from Heuterman, as MS96-24.

Processing Note

In 2005, these departmental papers were separated out of Thomas Heuterman’s personal papers, and redesignated as UA2005-12. They were processed in June 2019 by University Archivist Mark O’English.

These materials were separated out of Cage 701, Thomas Heuterman Papers, 1867-1996.
