Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Dale Moss was born on March 27, 1930 in Thornton, Idaho. After completing an undergraduate degree from Ricks College in Rexberg, Idaho, Moss went on to attend Cornell University where he received masters and doctorate degrees in plant physiology. Prior to his arrival at Oregon State University in 1977, Moss had worked at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station and the University of Minnesota. At OSU, Moss served as chair of the Crop and Soil Science Department and was engaged in a number of research projects. Among the most notable of these projects was a three-year study of the effects of acid rain upon agricultural crops in Oregon. Other studies directed by Moss focused on wheat research. These investigations included research on the bioregulaters associated with wheat head development and the modeling of environmental adaptation in wheat.

Actively involved in the professional community, Moss served as president of the American Society of Agronomy (1987) and the Crop Science Society of America. Moss also participated in a tour of China by the American Wheat Studies Delegation in 1977. This exchange program was sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences in conjunction with the Scientific and Technical Association of China. Another member of this 10-member delegation was OSU Crop Science Professor Warren Kronstad.

Moss retired from Oregon State University in 1995 and became Professor Emeritus. He died in 2003.

The Dale Moss Papers are comprised of materials generated and collected by Crop and Soil Science Professor and Department Chairman Dale Moss. This collection reflects Moss' research activities and involvement in the American Wheat Studies Delegation trip to China in 1977. Along with article reprints, the Dale Moss Papers contain correspondence, a narrative work report, photographs, publications, and speeches.

The documentation relating to Moss' research include materials that illustrate his doctoral work at Cornell University and subsequent research at the University of Minnesota in addition to his projects at Oregon State University. Of special note among the research records are images and other materials pertaining to Moss' three-year study of the effect of acid rain upon agricultural crops.

The American Wheat Studies Delegation's trip to China is reflected in photographs and publications.

The photographs consist primarily of color slides. In addition to documenting Moss' research projects at OSU and elsewhere, the images also depict the construction of the Crop Science building in 1980 and Moss leading a tour of the finished building to a group, some of whom are identified as OSU faculty members. The faculty featured in these images include Floyd Bolton, Warren Kronstad, Wil Post, Jack Davis, and Cliff Trow.
