Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
The Mountaineers, an outdoor recreation, education, and conservation organization based in Seattle, Washington, was formed in 1906 to explore the wild areas and mountains surrounding the Puget Sound region. Early activities consisted of hiking, climbing, skiing, snowshoeing and stage productions by the Mountaineers Players. Today, the club offers even more in the way of activities including bicycling, photography, kayaking, sailing, international trips and environmental education classes. The Mountaineers work to ensure that wilderness areas are preserved and protected through the actions of their Conservation, Recreation Resources and Stewardship divisions. Volunteer members track issues, mobilize members, do trail maintenance, work with coalitions, and lobby local and national legislators. The club's mission is to enrich the community by helping people explore, conserve, learn about and enjoy the lands and waters of the Pacific Northwest.
From the founding of the club until 1980, the highlight of the year was the annual summer outing. These generally were for two or three weeks and involved climbs, both major and minor, as well as hikes. Summer outings were attended by as many as 100 Mountaineers in some years. On most trips, pack trains carried equipment while Mountaineers members traveled on foot, however a few summer outings were conducted in motor vehicle caravans. Early outings were at various locations throughout the Olympic and Cascade Mountains. As time went on, the trips ranged further afield into the American and Canadian Rockies, Sierra Nevadas, and various national parks of the western United States. The summer outings were discontinued in 1981 when the damage to wilderness areas from large groups of campers was no longer considered sustainable.
In addition to lengthy Summer Outings, The Mountaineers also organized regular trail trips, or day hikes, for members in the Cascade and Olympic Mountains, Puget Sound, and coastal areas.
The Mountaineers Players grew out of "dramatic diversions" performed around the campfire at the club's Rhododendron Preserve on the Kitsap Peninsula. On June 17, 1923 the Mountaineers' first formal production, Robin of Sherwood took place. Mabel Furry, an active Mountaineer member, persuaded the group to take acting classes with Lois Sandall, who served as the Mountaineers Players director from 1924 through 1936 and again from 1941 through 1950. The Mountaineers built an outdoor theater on a level spot on their property near Chico Creek, Washington. The Forest Theater opened on June 6, 1926 with a production of Rainald and the Red Wolf and has remained one of the oldest active outdoor theaters in the country.
Realizing the critical importance of mountain safety, the club created a climbing course in 1935, led by the noted conservationist and outdoorsman, Wolf Bauer. Bauer, born in the Bavarian Alps, introduced climbing techniques not generally known in the United States. Mountaineers instructors included Lloyd and Mary Anderson, Jack Hossack, and Philip and Agnes Dickert. The climbing structure Monitor Rock, now called Schurman Rock, was built by the Mountaineers at Seattle's Camp Long in 1939 as a way to help train the public in proper climbing techniques before heading off to the mountains. The club also produced the climbing textbook Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills in 1960, which is still considered the standard textbook of mountaineering. The Seattle Mountain Rescue and Safety Council, later renamed the Mountain Rescue Council, was founded by Mountaineers members Ome Daiber, Otto Trott, and Wolf Bauer. This voluntary group established search and rescue procedures and training classes that became the model for other such programs throughout the country. The group was involved with the production of several instructional films illustrating climbing, search and rescue, and safety techniques, some produced by Bob and Ira Spring, notably This is Self Arrest , narrated by climber, Jim Whittaker.

Canada; A Journey of 650 Miles by Rail Trip to Mt. Robson and Jasper National Park in Canada. Hikers,
including Edmond S. Meany and his son Ned Meany, travel from the Denison and
Brittain Ranch on the Kinney Lake trail through the Valley of 1000 Falls and
Robson Pass. A temporary camp at Kinney Lake and permanent camp at Lake
Adolphus. Men and women hike and climb in the surrounding mountains with views
of Mt. Robson, the Mural Glacier, Mumm Peak and Mt. Resplendent. Includes

Ten Peaks in the background. Members climb to the Mt. Shaffer summit and view
surrounding peaks. A group takes a multi-day trip through Opabin, Wenkehemna,
Mitre, Wasatch and Abbot Passes. Members hike and ride horses on the trail to
Lake O’Hara. Views of Lake McArthur and Mt. Biddle. Truck ride to Emerald Lake

The Gypsy Tour,
1929 A commercially produced film by National Parks of Canada,
Department of the Interior.Title card: National Parks of Canada,
Department of the Interior, presents The Gypsy Tour; A modern caravan,
comprising three score Seattle Mountaineers, arrive at the west door of the
Canadian Rockies, their happy hunting ground for 1929. Trip to national
parks in Canada. Cars travel through Sinclair Canyon in Kootenay National Park
and enter the “three-park unit” of Kootenay, Banff and Yoho National Parks.
They drive one hundred miles to Lake Louise, where they go horseback riding.
The group at Moraine Lake. At Hector, the party hikes the ten mile trail to set
up camp at Lake O'Hara. A climb of Wiwaxy Peak includes panoramic views of
Glacier Peak, Ringrose Peak, and Mt. Hungabee. The group passes the Takakkaw
Falls and drives through Kicking Horse Canyon.

Versions of The Mountaineers summer outing to Mt
Rainier, 1930 Trip to Mount Rainier in Washington. The outing circled the
mountain and made two attempts on the summit. No shelter existed at Steamboat
Prow in 1930.The group takes a trail past Comet Falls and camps at Van Trump
Park. They travel to Indian Henry's Hunting Ground and swim in Mirror Lake.
Hikers travel off-trail, pass St. Andrews Lake and arrive at Klapatchee Park to
set up camp. A group of hikers take a meadow walk and Sunset Ridge is seen
above the waters of Aurora Lake. A hiking party departs over Puyallup Glacier
from Klapatchee to Sunset Park, where they camp. Climbers ascend Echo and
Observation Rocks for views of the North Mowich glacier, then ascend from Spray
Park toward Russell Glacier. Passing below Echo Rock, the party descends
eastward toward Carbon Glacier with Willis Wall in the background. The party
ascends old moraine slopes on the east side of the Carbon Glacier toward their
next camp at Mystic Lake. A party ascends toward Curtis Ridge. Climbers cross Winthrop
Glacier and camp in Forecastle Camp below the Steamboat Prow. Climbers ascend

On the summit, climbers take in panoramic views of Mt. Olympus, looking over
Dodwell-Rixon Pass, and a view of Skyline Ridge. On the return, the climbers
glissade down a snowfield below a rocky peak and view the peak of Mt. Seattle
from below, at Martins Park. Campers relax at Elwha Basin Camp. Views of Mt.

Caravan: The Story of their
Twenty-eighth Annual Outing, Glacier National Park, Montana, August 4th to 19th
1934 Trip to Glacier National Park in Montana. The Mountaineers
caravan travels through eastern Washington en route to Glacier. Scenes of the
Vantage Bridge, President Franklin Roosevelt's special train passing through
sagebrush country, coming to inspect the Grand Coulee dam. Lake Aloika, Lake
Pend Orielle, Logan Pass, and Hidden Lake. After setting up camp at Glacier, the Mountaineers hike to
Avalanche Basin. From Logan Pass, they view Mt. Reynolds and Hidden Lake. Group
hikes to Clemmens Glacier and on the Garden Wall with views of Mt. Reynolds and
Heaven's Peak. Another group climbs Mt. Reynolds and Mt. Oberlin. Mountain
sheep graze. Views from the Granite Park Chalet include Going-to-the-Sun

The Mountaineers Thirtieth Annual
Outing Encircling Mount Rainier, July 25 to August 15, 1936 Trip circling Mt. Rainier. The group arrives at the Nisqually
entrance to Mount Rainier National Park at Longmire Hot Springs. They pass
Comet Falls and set up camp at Van Trump Park. They take a high line trip over
Kautz Glacier. A herd of goats crosses a snowfield on Pyramid Glacier. The
Mountaineers pause at Indian Henry's with views of Mt. Rainier reflected in
Mirror Lake. The pack train arrives at Indian Paint Brush. Views of Indian
Henry's from St. Andrew's park. Views of Aurora Peak, Mt. Rainier from St.

1938 Trip to the Selkirk Mountains in British Columbia. Members set

group hikes up the Illecillewaet Glacier and Mt. Sir Donald. Panoramic view of
Mount Cheops and the Swiss Peaks. Views of mountains and waterfalls from Mount

Outing, Grand Teton National Park, July 31 to August 10 Trip to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. The film promotes
The Mountaineers as a "year round club active in Climbing, Skiing, Hiking,
Forest Theater Plays, etc." with a mission to "explore the mountains and
preserve the natural beauty of Northwestern America." Yellowstone Falls and Yellowstone Lake. Geysers including Old
Faithful. Yellowstone Lodge. A view of the Tetons looking across Jackson Lake.
Activities at the Mountaineers' camp at String Lake, where Mountaineers set up

Ali Baba and with the Forest Theater that they
created a forest theater of their own, dedicated August 13, 1933. For the

performance new music was used for the first time.

the Mountaineers Players in 1938, 1939, and 1940.

The First
Ascent of Pinnacle Peak (A and B Roll) An unfinished film of an expedition via float plane and by foot
to Pinnacle peak in the Yukon Territory, Canada. Expedition members include Bob
Solibakke, Al Randall, Ome Daiber, Frank Bannon, Norm Benton, Arne Bloomer, Bob
Boohor, Ed Boulton, Pat Chamay, Chuck Crenshaw, Chuck De Hart, Dave McBrayer,
Frances Randall, Bob Solibakke, Mitch (should be Marie) Working and Bill
Zauche. Expedition members leave Seattle to fly to Juneau, Alaska,
where they fly to Haines, Alaska, then travel by bus over White Pass to Kluane
Lake in the Yukon Territory. From Kluane Lake, they fly through the Saint Elias
Mountains and land on the Kaskawulsh Glacier. The team skis across the glacier
to establish base camp near Pinnacle Peak. Members Boulton, McBrayer, Booher,
Bloomer, Randall and Daiber climb to the summit. The expedition establishes a
landing strip on the glaciers. Aerial views of the mountains, as members of the
expedition fly back to Kluane Lake. The group makes a stop in Whitehorse and
