The 24-page album contains 61 black and white prints, a newspaper clipping of Clarence Nichols’ obituary, and a clipping of a poem entitled, “Four-Leaf Clover.” There are 24 prints on the front sides of the album pages, two of which are dated 1901 and 1905. Subjects of these photographs include: the bark Big Bonanza in Unimak Pass, Alaska; Cape Flattery and Tatoosh Island, Washington; the interior of St. Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church, the church graveyard, and a barabara at Nushagak, Alaska; and the following Bellingham, Washington scenes: Chuckanut Bay, Third Point, Whatcom Creek, Deception Pass, Bellingham Bay, Dead Man’s Point, an Indian canoe race, the Pacific American Fisheries Co. Cannery in Fairhaven, the Nichols’ cabin on Lake Whatcom, and the Nichols Family seated for dinner inside their house on 24th Street. The other family photographs in the album were added later, and date from 1925 to 1942. Subjects of these photographs include: Clarence Nichols’ grave; Minnie Nichols; Vera Walsworth’s wedding; a pioneer’s day parade in Paso Robles, California; and the Nichols’ children, grandchildren and friends in Washington and California.

Historical NoteReturn to Top

Clarence A. Nichols was born in Essex County, New York, in 1855. His family settled in Postville, Iowa, in 1865. At the age of 21, Nichols moved to Alma, Nebraska, where he met and married Minnie Merry. In 1888, the couple and their five children traveled west and settled in Geneva near Bellingham, Washington. Clarence worked as a carpenter in the Bellingham area, where they had four additional children. Six of the Nichols’ children survived to adulthood: Guy and Relta of Seattle, Washington; Matie of Vancouver, British Columbia; Lucille of Paso Robles, California; and Lyda and Richard of Bellingham, Washington. The couple had eight grandchildren: Clyde and Vera Walsworth, Margaret and Robert Nichols-Byrnes, Charles and Mary Jean Cook, Marion Nichols, and Martin Kuehl. Clarence Nichols was also a member of the Fairhaven Yeomen lodge. Clarence Nichols died in Bellingham, Washington, in 1933.
