The collection consists of a photograph album of the Clarence and Minnie Nichols family of
Bellingham, Washington. The 24-page album contains 61 black and white prints, a newspaper
clipping of Clarence Nichols’ obituary, and a clipping of a poem entitled, “Four-Leaf
Clover.” There are 24 prints on the front sides of the album pages, two of which are dated

include: Clarence Nichols’ grave; Minnie Nichols; Vera Walsworth’s wedding; a pioneer’s day

Clarence A. Nichols was born in Essex County, New York, in 1855. His family settled in
Postville, Iowa, in 1865. At the age of 21, Nichols moved to Alma, Nebraska, where he met
and married Minnie Merry. In 1888, the couple and their five children traveled west and
settled in Geneva near Bellingham, Washington. Clarence worked as a carpenter in the
Bellingham area, where they had four additional children. Six of the Nichols’ children
survived to adulthood: Guy and Relta of Seattle, Washington; Matie of Vancouver, British
Columbia; Lucille of Paso Robles, California; and Lyda and Richard of Bellingham,
Washington. The couple had eight grandchildren: Clyde and Vera Walsworth, Margaret and
Robert Nichols-Byrnes, Charles and Mary Jean Cook, Marion Nichols, and Martin Kuehl.
Clarence Nichols was also a member of the Fairhaven Yeomen lodge. Clarence Nichols died in
Bellingham, Washington, in 1933.
