Content Description

The Idaho Union List of Serials Records, 1959-1974 collection contains a compilation of the Union List of Serials in Idaho Libraries, 1969, and the additions and corrections incorporated in the Supplement, December 1973, thereby constituting an unbudgeted and unauthorized Second Edition, known to exist in four copies. It also contains correspondence about the serial holdings of the participating libraries, status reports on the project of compiling the union list, computer printouts of the Idaho Union List of Serials, a 1973 supplement, and a 1974 edition of the Union List.

Historical Note

In 1967 the Idaho State Library Board adopted the recommendation of Idaho's Advisory Council on LSCA (Library Services and Construction Act) Title III to make the first project in interlibrary cooperation the compilation of a union list of serials and newspapers in major Idaho libraries. It was hoped to include all college and university libraries, and public libraries in college towns. The list was to be in catalog form, printed from IBM cards. The model for this compilation was the Idaho-WSU union list of serials which accounts for the folder of that material being included in this manuscript group. The coordinating committee for the project consisted of Helen Miller, Merle Wells, Paul Conditt, Rex White, Fred Keller, George Stultz, and Robert Ensley.

To supplement the larger Union List of Serials in Idaho was a shorter volume, the Idaho Union List of Serials, which listed only those serials published within the state of Idaho. A supplement to the Union List was published in 1973, and four copies of a new, unauthorized, second edition combining the first list and the supplement were printed in 1974.
