Historical NoteReturn to Top

In 1964, Washington State University built the Publications Building on Farm Way (later Grimes Way), and moved the Duplicating and Main Services there, as well as the Office of Publications and Printing. The functions of the building have remained fundamentally the same since, though the departments are today known as Mailing Services and University Publishing.

In 1936, Caroline Cooper joined the Correspondence Office (predecessor to Mailing and Duplication) as a mimeograph operator. She was made head of that department in 1948 and remained in that position until retiring in 1975. She passed away in 1978, and in 1979 the Publications Building was renamed the Cooper Publications Building.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The photographs primarily depict social activities within the departments located in the Publications Building. A large portion of the photographs fully identify all people shown and are dated.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in two boxes. The first box contains a loosely chronological scrapbook of photographs, dating from 1954 to 1980, of the employees of the department. The second box contains folders of loose photographs dating from 1949 to 2001. The loose photographs are primarily arranged in chronological folders, but a few subject-based folders can be found at the end of the collection. In a few cases, sets of photographs of an event are separated out into their own folders, filed at the end of that year. Within each folder, items remain in their original order. A few negatives and slides are interfiled in the appropriate folders.

Acquisition Information

The materials in this collection were transferred to the Washington State University Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives and Special Collection by Ed Sala of University Publishing on October 30, 2017, and retained as accession UPC 2017-02.

Processing Note

The collection was processed by James Feller in November, 2017. The front and back covers of the scrapbook were discarded for space reasons during rehousing, but the album is otherwise retained in its original format and order.
