The collection comprises films and videotapes created by or about students, faculty, and staff of the University of Oregon created between 1919-2009. Items include films made by faculty for teaching or to demonstrate research; home movies; footage of athletic events; commencements; homecoming and similar activities; footage of campus, classrooms, and buildings; dance and music performances; documentaries; recruitment and promotional films; and a feature-length narrative film produced by students in 1929 called Ed’s Coed.

In 1941, Woody Guthrie and his family left southern California for a job in Portland, Oregon writing songs for a documentary film about the dams being built on the Columbia River.
