Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Guy Graham was born on September 23, 1893. He was first hired by Libby, McNeill & Libby in 1913 as a cannery helper. During his career with Libby, McNeill & Libby he was a draughtsman, District Superintendent, General Superintendent and became the Vice President of the salmon division in 1941.He retired after 41 years with Libby, McNeill & Libby, and died in 1976.

By the 1940s, Libby, McNeill & Libby was one of the largest producers of salmon canning operations in the United States. The Libby fleet included the ship Abner Coburn , the barks George Curtis , Oriental , and W.B. Flint , the schooners Henry Wilson , and Salvator , the motor ships W.F. Burrows , and Libby Maine , the steamers George F. Haller and North Star , and the power schooner Expansion . On average, it produced 700,000 cases of canned salmon annually. Libby canneries were located at Egegik, Ekuk, Libbyville, Koggiung, Egushik, Nushagak, Kenai, Yakutat, and Ketchikan.

In 1929 the Craig cannery was bought from the Seacoast Packing Co. The plants at Klawock, Karheen and Craig were consolidated into Craig in 1930. The main cannery at Craig burned in 1957.

George Inlet
Built in 1913, the George Inlet cannery was leased circa 1926 and purchased in 1928. Closed in 1958, it reopened in 1996 as a historic landmark, with guided tours of the early cannery operations and equipment.

The property at Kenai River was purchased in 1911. The cannery was built there in 1912. In 1921, there was a fire and the original cannery burnt to the ground. Libby, McNeill & Libby built a new plant nearby in 1922.

Koggiung is located on the Kvichak River, in Bristol Bay, Alaska. The Koggiung plant was purchased in 1913. It caught fire in 1915, just a few days before the canning season began. It was rebuilt and remained in operation until 1957.

Alaska Packers Association, or APA, was a San Francisco based manufacturer of Alaska canned salmon, founded in 1891. APA was well known for operating the "Star Fleet" as late as 1927. The "Star Fleet" was the last fleet of commercial sailing vessels on the West Coast of North America.

Built in 1905 by Stimson, the Yakutat plant was purchased by Libby, McNeill & Libby in 1913. It was operated by LM&L until 1951, at which point it was purchased by the Bellingham Canning Company of Bellingham, Washington.

On May 14, 1917, St. Francis, bound for Libby, McNeill, & Libby's northern station at Koggiung from San Francisco with a full cargo of supplies and nearly 250 cannery workers and fishermen, was swept onto the rocky Alaskan shore at Unimak Pass. The vessel and all of its cargo was deemed a total loss.
