Biographical Note

M. Dale Kinkade was a linguist with expertise in Salish languages. He was born on July 18, 1933 in Hartline, Washington. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Washington, and his Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1963. Professor Kinkade taught at the University of Kansas from 1964 to 1973. In 1973, he began teaching at the University of British Columbia, where he remained until his retirement in 1998 as a Distinguished Professor of Linguistics.

Kinkade conducted field work on several severely-endangered languages. He contributed to dictionaries of three Salish languages (Moses Columbia, Upper Chehalis, and Cowlitz); published over one hundred papers with the International Journal of American Linguistics, Anthropological Linguistics, and other professional journals; and wrote chapters for the Handbook of North American Indians. He also served as a long-time member of American Anthropological Association, Linguistic Society of America, and Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas. Kinkade also served for many years of a trustee of the Jacobs Research Fund, which was founded by Melville and Elizabeth Jacobs to support fieldwork on Pacific Northwest languages and cultures.

M. Dale Kinkade lived and worked in Canada for thirty years, although he never became a Canadian citizen. He died on December 19, 2004.
