Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Harold Tascher was born in Ashkum, Illinois on April 16, 1900 to George and Alice Tascher. He married Stella Wachter in Illinois in June of 1930, they would have two daughters. Tascher earned his Ph.D. in political science and economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1932. In 1933, he joined the Montana State University (now the University of Montana-Missoula) faculty as an assistant professor of social science. He served as director of the War Labor Board in Denver, Colorado from 1943 to 1945. His wife, Stella, passed away in 1951. He married his second wife, Ina May, in Missoula, Montana in 1956.

Tascher was active in the International Conference of Social Work and helped start the Institute of Indian Affairs at Montana State University in the 1950s. He authored the book Maggie and Montana: The Story of Maggie Smith Hathaway and published several other works including “Indian Affairs in Montana” for the Institute of Indian Affairs and The Quest for Social Intelligence. Tascher retired from the University in 1970 and moved to Portland, Oregon. He passed away on March 1, 1989.

This collection contains the professional papers of former University of Montana-Missoula Social Science Professor Harold Tascher from the early 1930s through the 1960s. The materials relate to his teaching social work and his efforts with social welfare organizations. The collection contains course material, student papers, projects, and research. There are also files relating to different organizations and programs he was involved with such as English for Speakers of Other Languages, National Association of Social Workers, Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, American Public Workers Association, Girl Reserves, and numerous others. The collection contains Tascher’s own writing, reports, research, and correspondence. There is material from the Indian Affairs Institute that includes reports and correspondence. There are Montana Conservation Council reports, minutes, programs, newsletters, and event materials. Scrapbooks from Women’s Clubs from all over Montana chronicle youth activities in the early 1950s. Correspondence, reports, and student projects with local and state welfare agencies from the 1940s through the 1960s are also prominent.

Processing Note

This collection was received as a single accession with no rearrangement. Original titles, folders, and boxes have been retained. Prior to 1996, materials relating to Tascher’s book, Maggie and Montana: The Story of Maggie Smith Hathaway, were removed and processed as the Maggie Smith Hathaway Collection (Mss 224).

Separated Materials

These materials arrived with Harold Tascher’s research material and scrapbooks on Maggie Smith Hathaway as well as a manuscript for his book Maggie and Montana: The Story of Maggie Smith Hathaway. The Maggie Smith Hathaway materials were separated from Tascher’s papers and processed as their own collection, Mss 224.
