		  science at the University of Montana-Missoula from 1933 until 1970. He was
		  active in many social programs throughout the state of Montana and helped start
		  the Institute of Indian Affairs at the University in the 1950s. This collection
		  relates to his teaching social work and his efforts with social welfare
		  organizations.</abstract>

      <head>Biographical Note</head>
      <p>Harold Tascher was born in Ashkum, Illinois on April 16, 1900 to
		  George and Alice Tascher. He married Stella Wachter in Illinois in June of
		  1930, they would have two daughters. Tascher earned his Ph.D. in political
		  science and economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in
		  1932. In 1933, he joined the Montana State University (now the University of
		  Montana-Missoula) faculty as an assistant professor of social science. He
		  served as director of the War Labor Board in Denver, Colorado from 1943 to
		  1945. His wife, Stella, passed away in 1951. He married his second wife, Ina
		  May, in Missoula, Montana in 1956. </p>
      <p>Tascher was a lead professor for several summer institutes as well as the social work lab, sometimes known as the field work program.</p>
      <p>Tascher was active in the International Conference of Social Work and
		  helped start the Institute of Indian Affairs at Montana State University in the
		  1950s. He authored the book <emph>Maggie and Montana: The Story of Maggie Smith
		  Hathaway</emph> and published several other works including “Indian Affairs in
		  Montana” for the Institute of Indian Affairs and The Quest for Social
		  Intelligence. Tascher retired from the University in 1970 and moved to
		  Portland, Oregon. He passed away on March 1, 1989.</p>

      <p>This collection contains the professional papers of former University of Montana-Missoula Social Science Professor Harold Tascher. The materials date from 1929 through 1970 and relate to his social work teaching and his efforts with social welfare organizations. There are also files related to organizations and programs Tascher was involved with in both personal and professional capacities, including the American Association of Social Workers, the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, the Indian Affairs Institute the Montana Conservation Council and several others. Correspondence, reports, and student Social Work Lab projects with local and state welfare agencies from 1938 through the 1960s are also prominent.</p>

      <p>This collection was received by the Archives in 1972. Prior to 1996, materials relating to Tascher’s book, <emph>Maggie and Montana: The Story of Maggie Smith Hathaway</emph>, were removed and processed as the Maggie Smith Hathaway Collection (Mss 224). In 2025, the remaining collection materials were processed. At that time, the Build Freedom with Youth Contest Reports from Montana were removed and processed into their own collection (Mss 1020).</p>
      <p> During processing, student course papers and grade reports, duplicates, and published materials were removed from the collection. All materials were rehoused into archival grade folders and boxes. Original folder titles were retained when present.</p>
