Historical Note
Nouvelle-Calédonie (New Caledonia) is the name of the French territory in the southwest Pacific Ocean. These islands were annexed by France in 1853 and served as a penal colony from 1864 to 1897. A civilian administration of the territory was established in 1885. In 1946, it became a French Overseas Territory with limited self-government.
Between 1805 and 1858 it was also the name of a fur-trading district of the Hudson's Bay Company in British Columbia, Canada. Source: Riches, Christopher, and Jan Palmowski. "New Caledonia."
