Nouvelle-Calédonie (New Caledonia) is the name of the French territory in the southwest Pacific Ocean. These islands were annexed by France in 1853 and served as a penal colony from 1864 to 1897. A civilian administration of the territory was established in 1885. In 1946, it became a French Overseas Territory with limited self-government.

French manuscript titled "Aperçu des essences forestières de la Nouvelle-Calédonie" / par Edmes Hayes, Ingénieur Agricole, [1880-1889?]. Hand-written, bound text describing the flora of New Caledonia by an agricultural engineer. Author's name is written Edmes Hayes and Edme Hayes.

A text of the same title held in the Bibliothéque nationale de France credits the text to Edme Alfred Hayes (1843-19..), published 1887 by Ministère des colonies (Colonial Ministry).
