Biographical Note

Inspiration Dissemination is a weekly talk radio show airing on Oregon State University's student-run campus radio station, KBVR-88.7 FM, Corvallis. First launched in January 2012 and originally hosted by OSU graduate students Zhian Kamvar and Joey Hulbert, the initial intent of Inspiration Dissemination was to inspire undergraduates to continue their studies in graduate school. Over time the program has shifted its focus more squarely on the graduate student experience. Each episode features a different Oregon State graduate student who discusses their research project as well as their inspiration for choosing their research topic, their student experience, their goals while at Oregon State, and their ambitions following graduation.

Zhian Kamvar - or DJ CATGAG as he is known on the air - is a Ph.D. student in Botany and Plant Pathology. Joey Hulbert, also known as DJ Baby Kangaroo, was a Master of Science student in Botany and Plant Pathology and Wood Science Engineering, who graduated from OSU in 2014 and moved on to Ph.D. studies in South Africa at the University of Pretoria. Kamvar and Hulbert, who met at Oregon State, both had worked in student radio as undergraduates. One of their goals for Inspiration Dissemination was to give their guests an opportunity to explain their research to an audience that was not familiar with their field of study and, in turn, to become more confident in explaining their research to anyone. A secondary objective to the show has been to provide graduate students with experience being interviewed. In 2014 the show received an award, "Most Innovative Radio Program," at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Conference.

Co-hosts in addition to Kamvar and Hulbert have included Matthew McConnell, a master's degree student in the history of science; Kristen Finch, a doctoral student in Botany and Plant Pathology; and Adrian Gallo, a master's degree student in Sustainable Forest Management. The show has retained its basic formula for its duration, though over time more emphasis has been placed on guests' personal stories and relatively less time spent on explaining research.
