Biographical Note

Neal Oldfield Hines (1908-1993) was an author and former director of the University of Washington Office of Public Information. In 1949 he was a member of the Bikini Resurvey Expedition conducted by the University of Washington Applied Fisheries Laboratory under contract with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. The purpose of the expedition was to gather information on the biological effects of the Bikini nuclear bomb tests in 1946. It was one of numerous expeditions to the atoll in the years following the tests. Hines also accompanied a 1956 Eniwetok Atoll survey.

As a result of his visits to the Marshall Islands, Hines became interested in the islanders who were evacuated from their home on Bikini Atoll in 1946. He wrote "Proving Ground: An Account of the Radiological Studies in the Pacific, 1946-1961", a book published in 1962 and several articles, including one on the Marshall Island stick charts for Pacific Discovery in 1952 and article on Bikini for the Encyclopedia Britannica in 1970.
