			 1973-1981</item></list></p></arrangement><bioghist encodinganalog="5450_" altrender="sync"><p>Neal Oldfield Hines (1908-1993) was an author and former director of
		  the University of Washington Office of Public Information. In 1949 he was a
		  member of the Bikini Resurvey Expedition conducted by the University of
		  Washington Applied Fisheries Laboratory under contract with the U.S. Atomic
		  Energy Commission. The purpose of the expedition was to gather information on
		  the biological effects of the Bikini nuclear bomb tests in 1946. It was one of
		  numerous expeditions to the atoll in the years following the tests. Hines also
		  accompanied a 1956 Eniwetok Atoll survey.</p><p> As a result of his visits to the Marshall Islands, Hines became
		  interested in the islanders who were evacuated from their home on Bikini Atoll
		  in 1946. He wrote "Proving Ground: An Account of the Radiological Studies in
		  the Pacific, 1946-1961", a book published in 1962 and several articles,
		  including one on the Marshall Island stick charts for Pacific Discovery in 1952
		  and article on Bikini for the Encyclopedia Britannica in 1970.</p></bioghist><scopecontent><p>Materials relating to his books, "Proving Ground", "Fish of Rare
		  Breeding", and "Denny's Knoll"; correspondence, photographs, diary, writings,
		  reports, audio tape recordings, maps, and publications concerning atomic
		  testing at Bikini Atoll in 1946 and its aftermath; publications and maps
		  concerning the Marshall Islands and background material concerning the
