Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a New Deal public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for young unemployed, unmarried men as part of the New Deal. It provided unskilled manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands owned by federal, state and local governments. During the years of the CCC operations, they planted nearly 3 billion trees to help reforest America, constructed more than 800 parks nationwide and upgraded most state parks, updated forest fire fighting methods, and built a network of service buildings and public roadways in remote areas.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Album of photographs documenting two CCC camps. The album cover says "Memories of Civilian Conservation Corps Company 4734. The album has text in the beginning which talks about what the CCC is and does. It also has information on the district of Arkansas administrators and about the Company 4734 camp at Forrest City, Arkansas. The camp was opened in July 1935 and consisted of all African American workers with White commanding officers. A list of all the participants is also included. The rest of the album consists of snapshots of work and life at the camp. A second part of the album contains photographs of the Beacon Rock CCC camp number 5709 and several clippings explaining that 72 men from Arkansas have come to do CCC work. (These CCC workers appear to be White.) It also has snapshots of personal photographs from a trip. It is probable that this album was put together by one of the CCC camp officers from the first camp.
