Historical NoteReturn to Top
Keep Washington Green was an organization which worked from 1940-1995 to prevent human-caused forest and range wildfires through public education. Formation of the organization was spurred by a proclamation issued by Washington's Governor, Clarence D. Martin, on May 31, 1940, in which he declared, "Fire is the worst enemy of trees," and called for positive action by every citizen of the state to help prevent wildfires. Over the next 55 years, Keep Washington Green, in cooperation with members of state and local governments, and private citizens, campaigned to prevent fires in Washington's forests. Keep Washington Green was dissolved, December 31, 1995 after a decrease in membership, industry, and federal and state funding resources, coupled with an increased awareness by other agencies and organizations about the need to educate their constitutents on the dangers of wildfires.
