Hugh E. Morrison was a research entomologist with the Oregon State University Agricultural Experiment Station from 1937 until his death in 1967. Hugh Engle Morrison earned a B.S. degree from Franklin and Marshall College in 1927 and a M.S. degree from the Ohio State University in 1936. He joined the faculty of Oregon State College as an Assistant in Entomology with the Agricultural Experiment Station in 1937; in the mid-1950s, he was promoted to Associate Entomologist. Morrison's research focused on hop pests; life, habits, and control of symphylans; injurious soil arthropods; and development of soil insecticides for control of pests affecting crops such as potatoes, corn, carrots, and mint.

The Hugh E. Morrison Papers document Morrison’s research on vegetable crop and hop pest control, symphylids, and the application of pesticides including DDT. The collection includes research reports on symphylids, red hop spiders, and cabbage maggots as well as communications between Morrison, other researchers, chemical companies, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture on the methods employed in the research and the results. In addition to reports, the collection includes brochures, correspondence, conference papers, newspaper clippings, research data, photographs, and a documentary film script. An instructional notebook for the course “Method of Insect Investigations” (Entomology 816), correspondence between Morrison and other entomologists about pesticide applicators, and abstracts of research papers presented at Pacific Northwest vegetable conferences are also included.

Acquisition Information
These materials were transferred in two accesssions to the former University Archives. The initial accession was received from the Entomology Department in 2002; the second accession was transferred by the Oregon State University Library in 2007. It is not known how or when the Library received the materials.
Processing Note
This finding aid was prepared under remote working conditions in 2020 without access to the original collection; consequently, the number of original photographs in the collection could not be determined by the finding aid author and is not included in this finding aid.
