Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Professor of economics, University of Washington.

Theresa Schmid McMahon born 1878, died 1961. Professor McMahon received her bachelor's degree from the University of Washington, but earned her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1909. In 1911, she began her teaching career at the University of Washington; where, until her retirement in 1937, she, her husband, and James Allen Smith were considered the thorns of Liberalism in the sides of a conservative U.S. administration. Dr. McMahon was a member of such "Radical" groups as the Socialists Society, and the Central Labor Council. Her subject was labor economics and the status of women. Professor McMahon lived during a very exciting time in the history of the development of the University. Therefore, "My Story," provides an unorthodox perspective towards events at the University.
