Pacific Northwest Promotional Brochures Collection, 1885-2009

Abstract: Collection created by the Oregon Historical Society containing brochures, pamphlets, and other promotional materials produced by states, counties, and municipalities in the northwestern United States and southwestern Canada, including Oregon, Washington State, British Columbia, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, California, and Hawaii. The primary focus is Oregon and Washington State, and most materials date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Included are many brochures produced under the auspices of the Sunset Homeseekers Bureau.

John Ball papers, 1831-1933

Abstract: Papers of John Ball (1794-1884), including ones relating to his meteorological and geological observations of the Northwest, and correspondence of his daughters with others about Ball and his papers. Ball accompanied Nathaniel J. Wyeth's 1832 expedition to Oregon, worked as a teacher for John McLoughlin, and briefly farmed in French Prairie before returning to the eastern United States in late 1833.

Abstract: Manuscript excerpt from a logbook by Samuel C. Damon describing a journey down the Columbia River and through the Pacific Northwest. Damon was editor of "The Friend," a serial devoted to temperance and mariners, from 1845 to 1884.

Abstract: Zane Grey (1872-1939) was an American author. The Zane Grey photography collection includes a photo album and approximately 50 photographic prints depecting Grey's Northwest travels. The collection also includes 3 issues of the Zane Grey Review containing articles related to the photographs in this collection.

William Foster Dalton papers, circa 1889-1960

Abstract: William Foster Dalton (1874-1955) was a Yorkshireman who began sailing in 1889. His travels took him to Seattle, Tacoma, San Francisco, and Oregon. Collection includes typescript letter from Phyllis Hester, Dalton's daughter, offering Dalton's autobiography to "Country Life," a British gardening and country living magazine; a manuscript summary of the autobiography by Kenneth Holmes; and microfilm of a manuscript book, "Wanderer's Life: an Autobiography," by Dalton.
