Kenneth D. Swan Photographs and Audio Tapes, 1911-1969

Abstract: K. D. Swan was the first photographer for the U.S. Forest Service's Northern Region Headquarters in Missoula, Montana. This collection represents his non-professional interests in outdoor recreation and travel and does not contain many official Forest Service images. It contains images of outdoor and town scenes in and around Missoula and other Montana communities, as well as images from some national forests, national parks, and states surrounding Montana. There are also many images of the southwestern United States, New England, and the Canadian Rockies. Audio tapes that he recorded to accompany slide lectures identify images and demonstrate his intent in producing them.

Bud Moore Papers, 1805-2014 (bulk 1942-2010)

Abstract: William Robert (Bud) Moore was a well-known forester and conservationist from Montana. Formerly the Division Chief of Fire Control and Air Operations for the Forest Service Northern Region, Moore wrote and spoke on sustainable forestry, trapping, hunting, and other wilderness topics following his retirement in 1974; he also published his novel The Lochsa Story: Land Ethics in the Bitterroot Mountains in 1996. This collection contains articles, photographs, videos, maps, journals, notebooks, research files, correspondence, and other personal papers created by and about Bud Moore.

Nathan J. Hayes Papers, 1927-1958

Abstract: Nathan J. Hayes was an employee of the Montana State Forestry Department (present-day Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation) near Missoula, Montana for over 30 years. This collection consists of his field notebook from 1927 and 1928 as well as two newspaper clippings about his career published in the late 1950s.

August "Gus" Ludwig Hormay Papers, 1900-1999

Abstract: The August "Gus" Ludwig Hormay Papers consists of extensive outgoing and incoming correspondence, in addition to calendars and diaries that document his daily activities, 1930-1999. There are also copies of his numerous publications on range management topics. Other components of the collection include research files on several national forests in northern California, including Modoc National Forest, Lassen National Forest, and Plumas National Forest, 1931-1993. A relatively small portion of the collection documents the family life of Hormay, including photographs of his family and his home in San Francisco.

George E. Foreman papers, 1922-1965

Abstract: The collection includes George Foreman's United States Forest Service work records and work diaries. It also includes photographs of Forest Service activities, the Foreman family, and farming and ranching scenes in and around the Gallatin Valley of Montana.

Charles E. Hardy papers, 1911-1977

Abstract: Charles E. "Mike" Hardy was a forester employed by the United States Forest Service Fire Laboratory in Missoula, Montana in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1975, he was hired to write a comprehensive report on forester Harry Thomas Gisborne's contributions to fire research and the U.S. Forest Service; this collection contains his research materials for the report including oral history transcripts, Forest Service reports, and Gisborne's writings and correspondence.
