Joel Ito collection, 1961-1994, undated

Abstract: Joel Ito was a medical illustrator at OHSU from 1966 to 2012; he was part of the Medical Illustration Core at the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC). Ito created medical illustrations and primate portraits for ONPRC director Dr. William Montagna as well as many other faculty and researchers during his long career at OHSU. This collection consists largely of Ito's medical illustrations, including drawings, paintings, and publishing proofs from his career at OHSU. The dates represented are from approximately 1986 to 1994, however much of the work is undated. Unattributed photographs and drawings, as well as works by other artists are also included.
Reid "Sam" Connell papers, 1943-2005

Abstract: Dr. Reid "Sam" Connell is a graduate of Oregon State University and the University of Oregon Medical School, with a master's in anatomy and a doctorate in medicine. As an instructor at OHSU, he taught anatomy, embryology, histology, and neurology as well as overseeing the allied health programs after his retirement. His research focused primarily on enabling those with broken spinal cords to regain function of limbs below the break.
Fred Harwin collection, 1965-2022

Abstract: Fred Harwin is an artist, medical illustrator, and ocularist. He is well-known for illustrating the breakthrough medical text Manual of Cardiac Surgery with Drs. Brad Harlan and Albert Starr. The vast majority of this collection consists of original illustrations by Harwin, including those from both the first and second editions of that manual.
Clarice Ashworth Francone medical illustration collection, 1936-1969

Abstract: Clarice Ashworth Francone studied at the Art Insitutute of Chicago and later studied medical illustration under Max Broedel at Johns Hopkins University. Ashworth moved to Oregon in 1929 and worked as a freelance illustrator. In 1936, she started working part-time at the University of Oregon Medical School, eventually becoming the head of the Medical Illustration Department. She is best known for her work on the anatomy and physiology textbook, Structure and Function of Man , which she co-authored with Dr. Stanley Jacob, professor of surgery at the University of Oregon Medical School. The Francone collection consists of preliminary sketches in pencil, finished drawings, books, published drawings and proofs of works by other medical illustrators, photographs, and some personal items.
Wilmot C. Foster anatomy lantern slides, 1930

Abstract: Wilmot C. Foster, born June 21, 1893 in Sheridan, Oregon, was an alumni of University of Oregon and University of Oregon Medical School (UOMS). He obtained his license to practice medicine in Oregon in 1920 and later went on to become the head of the UOMS Anatomy department. This collection consists of lantern slides used for teaching during his tenure at UOMS.

Abstract: Robert L. Bacon, Ph.D. was a great advocate of graduate and continuing medical education. This collection contains applications, bulletins, correspondence, and brochures showing the variety of programs available. Also included are medical illustrations, radiographs, x-rays, and research presentation materials accessioned in March of 2014.
