Fawn McKay Brodie papers, 1932-1983

Abstract: The Fawn McKay Brodie papers (1932-1983) document the life (1915-1981) and writings of this well-known but controversial Utah-born author and university professor. Included are personal materials, including a biography, interviews, awards, an obituary, and memorial; a file regarding her husband, Bernard Brodie, and her mother, Fawn Brimhall McKay; and family correspondence. The bulk of the collection deals with Brodie's five books: No Man Knows My History: The Life of Joseph Smith The Mormon Prophet (1945); Thaddeus Stevens, Scourge of the South (1959); The Devil Drives: A Life of Sir Richard Burton (1967); Thomas Jefferson: An Intimate History (1974); and Richard Nixon: The Shaping of His Character (1981). Of interest is extensive correspondence with noted historian Dale L. Morgan in which he comments extensively on the preparation of No Man Knows My History . Other documents reflect Brodie's tenure as professor of history at the University of California, Los Angeles, 1967-1977. Also present are articles, book reviews, and lectures.
