Historical Note
Philip Monroe Hostetler, born May 17, 1940 in Upland, California, graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Oregon School of Nursing in 1967. Hostetler was only the second man to complete the undergraduate program, the previous having earned their degree in 1964, of which much ado was made about in local papers. Post graduate, he obtained a Master of Nursing from the University of Washington in 1970. During his long nursing career, Hostetler was employed by the Providence Health System for the next 40 years in a multitude of roles including Critical Care Director for Providence St. Vincent, Assistant Director of Nursing and Nursing House Supervisor for Providence Portland, and Assistant Administrator for Patient Care at Providence Milwaukie. Later, Hostetler served as the Nurse Executive Liaison to the University of Portland and taught there as an Assistant Professor of Nursing, focusing on leadership content and skills. During this time he also started the Providence Scholarship program for nursing students. Hostetler retired in 2018.
Content Description
The Philip M. Hostetler papers house the personal papers of Philip Monroe Hostetler. This collection which dates from 1964-1976 contains photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, programs, University of Oregon School of Nursing (UOSN) course information, and ephemera evidencing the early integration of men into the nation's nursing programs.
This collection showcases a transitional period of UOSN, when much of the material and correspondence surrounding the program was directed exclusively towards women. The accompanying articles and letters are a vivid look into the now outdated societal concepts involving the nursing profession and its practitioners. For those researchers examining gender concepts in the workplace and the burgeoning diversity of nursing programs in the mid-20th century, these artifacts are of great value.
